About the city of Korolev, Moscow Region

What happened to Kaliningrad?

This Homepage has always talked about the city of Kaliningrad. Now all of the sudden we are talking about Korolev.  Have all of our Russian friends moved?  Well, the answer is No.

Kaliningrad has been officially changed by Russian President Boris Yeltsin to "Korolev".  The name change is logical because of Korolev's contribution to the aerospace industry.

However changing the name of a city is expensive and the change may take some time.   We are following the lead of our Russian friends and trying to call the city by the new name. For your own information, you may want to find out more about the man Korolev. For those of you have visited Russia, his statue is right in the middle of town.

Korolev, in the Moscow Region, is home to 200,000 people and the Russian Space Flight Control Center. The father of the Russian space program, Sergey Korolev, lived and worked in Korolev.  Korolev is a cluster of aerospace industries, hosting a considerable number of high-tech companies in command of a unique science and technology center.

The city of Korolev was founded December 26, 1938 in a Moscow suburb called Podlipki. In 1960, Korolev absorbed the neighboring town of Kostino.

Korolev is located to the north-east from Moscow, six kilometers away from the official border of Moscow's metropolitan area. The city is located along the Yarolslavl highway. It is only a 35 minute drive by car to Red Square or a 35 minute ride on the bus departing from railway station VDNH in Moscow. Sheremetevo international airport is 40 minutes away from Korolev by car.

The city is located on a railway trunk line running out of Moscow to Yarolslavl and further to Archangelsk in the north of Russia. Korolev is served by two stations on the railway line, Podlipki and Bolshevo. The ride take only a half-an-hour to Korolev from the Yaroslavl station in Moscow.

On the south rim of Korolev, there is a national park -- Elk Island -- a beautiful forest area making the city environmentally attractive. The city territory expands over nearly 12 square kilometers.
